TON is a decentralized internet platform that includes a blockchain with a native Gram token. Nikolai Durov developed and described the project of the platform. It was supposed to introduce TON as the technological basis of the Telegram messenger.
On March 24, 2020, by the decision of the District Court of New York, Gram tokens were recognized as securities and their circulation was prohibited. In this regard, Telegram refused to further develop TON and published the source code under the GPL license.
On May 7, 2020, a community of developers, validators, and crypto enthusiasts, including the TON Labs team responsible for developing the original TON, launched the Free TON project, based on TON.
