    Segregated Witness, Wiki

Segregated Witness (SegWit) is a protocol update from Bitcoin developers that aims to accumulate blockchain efficiency without increasing block size. That is, the main advantage of SegWit is that by excluding signatures from a 1 MB block, the size of the bitcoin block can be significantly increased without breaking consensus rules.

Among the issues the program must solve by optimizing the transaction block structure are network scalability, transaction confirmation rates, and lower fees.

A soft fork (rule changing) applies to cryptocurrencies such as Litecoin, DigiByte, and Vertcoin.
